John Almos Anderson

John Almos Anderson9 (Susan Jane Damron8, Charles C. W.7, Wilson6, George5, George4, Lazarus3, George2, Lawrence1) appeared in the 1860 federal census for Johnson Co., IL, at the age of three with his parents Henry and Susan Jane (Damron) Anderson.

J.A. was born 1 JUL 1857 at Vienna, Johnson Co.   He grew up in the Vienna area and married Miss Mary Margaret Walker on Christmas Day, 1878.

Mary Margaret was the daughter of F. Lee Walker, the first of our line to bear the traditional "Lee" as a middle name.   Mary M. was 15 years old at the time of her father's death 11 MAY 1875. At the age of 17, and with her guardian's consent, she married John Almos Anderson.  The Rev. Jesse Walker performed the ceremony.  John Almos was 21.

The family eventually re-located to Metropolis, Massac Co., IL, where J.A. was employed as a stationery engineer until 1927.

John Almos and Mary Margaret (Walker) Anderson and their family appeared in the 1900 federal census for Benton Pct., Massac Co., IL.  J.A. was now 42 and Mary Margaret was 40 (born APR 1860).  J.A. is listed as an engineer at the sawmill. Children listed are:

            Myrtle, age 13, born OCT 1886; (listed in brother Henry Lee's obituary in 1965          as Mrs. Myrtle Wheeler of Reevesville, IL and

            Harry, age nine, born APR 1891.

The 1930 Federal Census, Illinois, Massac County,       Metropolis, East Third Street, lists:

            John A. Anderson, father, 72, employed at Lumber Co.

            Mary M., mother, 68

Family lives on same street as Harry's brother Henry Lee and wife Belle.

John Almos died at Metropolis 8 OCT 1935; his wife died at Metropolis 28 JAN 1951.  Mary had lived with her oldest son Lee and his wife Bell. She chewed tobacco and was known by her great grandson Bobby (Robert Warren Anderson) as "Old Grandma".  She was 90 years old.

Samuel Frank Anderson

Brother of John Almos

Samuel went by Sam, Frank, and finally S.F. Anderson.  He was a bit of a character, according to his great grandson, David Ward Anderson of Conroe, Texas.  He had a few run ins with the law in Johnson Co., Illinois, and supposedly his arrival in Texas was hastened by one of these.  While he was a farmer, he evidently didn't let it keep him from hunting and fishing a good deal.

The differences between Henry and S.F. are astounding, again according to great grandson David.  Henry was evidently intelligent, industrious, involved in the community, a Mason and went to church.  S.F. didn't believe in school, hard work or church.

S.F.'s kids never went to school much.  His son, Norve (David's grandfather) only went to the first grade.  Norve was, for whatever reason, more like his grandfather.  He was intelligent, hard-working, and a practicing Christian.  Interesting what influences cause a person to develop the way he does, David commented.

We know of one son of Samuel and Melissa Anderson:

            Norve Clinton Anderson, born 17 NOV 1891; married Effie Pearl Parker, born 8      FEB 1893.  Norve and Effie were the parents of:

                        John Coby, born NOV 1910;

                        Ward Clinton, born 6 DEC 1918; married Leta Kathryn Whitten, born 15                               APR 1919. Ward and Leta were the parents of:

                                    Betty Kathryn, born 29 JUN 1941; married a Mr. Mercer;

                                    David Ward, born 29 DEC 1943; married Betty Kay Kugle, 13                                              JUL 1962. David and Betty were the parents of:

                                                Robert Clinton, born 13 JUL 1947; and

                                                Kirby Michael, born 9 MAY 1957.
