Mary Margaret Walker

Wife of John Almos Anderson

Daughter of F. Lee Walker

Mother of Henry Lee Anderson

Mary Margaret Walker, wife of John Almos Anderson, was the daughter of F. Lee Walker born in 1822.  In the 1900 census, Mary Margaret Anderson lists her father's birthplace as North Carolina.  The 1870 census says he was born in Tennessee.  F. Lee married Elizabeth Helm, daughter of Thomas Helm Jr. of Virginia.  Elizabeth was born in Tennessee in 1837.

F. Lee and Elizabeth (Helm) Walker lived and bore their children in Vienna Township, Johnson County, IL.  Neither lived to see their family grown.  A widower, Lee Walker died 11 MAY 1875, leaving ten children:

            William E., 27;

            James L., 25;

            (Mrs.) Martha J. Austin, 23;

            Sirena Catherine, 21;

            Joseph N., 16;

            MARY M., 15;

            Wesley S., 10;

            Nancy M., 7;

            Sarah F., 4; and

            Leroy, age one.

The Walker estate was worth $1,800.  Thomas C. Helm, probably an uncle (since the grandfather died in the Civil War), was appointed guardian of the minor children.  Property, including a small lot of timber out in the country and a few scattered tools, was later put up for sale.

Three coffins were purchased at the time of Lee Walker's death.  A look at the 1870 census, taken five years earlier, helps identify for whom the other two coffins might have been.

William, age 22, and James, 21, are living away from home.  The rest of the family consisted of Lee and his wife Elizabeth, born in Tennessee, and the following children:

            Martha, 18;

            Catherine, 16;

            John, 14 (no surviving John);

            Joseph, 11;

            MARY M., 9;

            Thomas, 6 (no surviving Thomas);

            Wesley; and

            Nancy.

            (Sarah and Leroy arrived after the census.)
