O'Harra

Children of William Henry

and Margaret Lavina (Ward) O’Harra

1.         William Frederick4 (William Henry3, Hugh2, John and Priscilla1), born 26 JAN 1868, Findlay, Hancock County, OH; married first Dolly Groom, divorced; married second Carrie Catherine Dempsey; died 29 JUN 1941 at Findlay. William Frederick was 13 years old when his father William Henry O'Harra died.  Will's little brother Edward Elias was nine.  The two boys were raised by their mother Margaret.

Will married first Dolly Groom and had one son, George.   He and second wife Carrie Catherine had four children and raised a grandchild as their son.

William O'Harra Expires in Toledo: Resident Here 50 Years

William F. O'Harra, 73, a native of Findlay and a resident of the city for 50 years, died at 6 o'clock Saturday evening in (Women's and Children's Hospital) Toledo.  He resided at 418 Troy Street. Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Zahnle and Schramm mortuary, 1987 Superior Street, Toledo, and interment will be between 3 and 4 o'clock in Maple Grove cemetery here.  Short services will be held at the grave here.

Mr. O'Harra is survived by his wife, Carrie; four sons, George of Peru, Indiana; Fred and Earl of Toledo, and Robert of Findlay; two daughters, Ethel Smith and Alma Wagner, both of Findlay, and eight grandchildren. He had lived in Toledo  since leaving Findlay 23 years ago.  (Not exactly true, since the 1930 census shows him living with his daughter Ethel’s family in Findlay.  But this may have been a short sojourn.) Wife Carrie Catherine survived Will O’Harra for a little more than ten years.  She died February 6, 1952 and is also buried at Maple Grove – but in a different section.

2.         Edward Elias, born 24 MAR 1872, Findlay, OH; married first Emily Anna; married second Amanda J.; died 20 MAY 1936 at Findlay. There is an old photograph, probably taken in the 1920s, taken from the files of the Hancock  Historical Museum, which shows the E.E. O'Harra Department Store in downtown Findlay.

In the 1910 federal census, Edward's wife was listed as Emily A., 37.  He was 38.  In 1900, Edward was 28 and Anna E. (Emily A.?) was 27, living at 1222 Summit St., Findlay, OH.  No children are listed.

Edward later re-married.  In the 1920 census, Edward is listed as 47, living with wife Amanda J., 43, in Findlay.  Again, no children are listed. The 1930 Federal Census for Findlay lists: Edward E. O'Harra, 58, merchant, general store; Amanda J. O'Harra, 54, wife

Also in 1930 in Findlay: Leo H. Smith, 34, head of household, salesman, life insurance; Ethel L. Smith, 33, wife; Leone J. Smith, 13, daughter; Betty A. Smith,   8, daughter; and William O'Harra, 60, father-in-law, salesman, general store. It would seem that, at least for a time, Will O'Harra returned to Findlay, lived with his daughter Ethel, and possibly worked for his brother Edward in Edward's store.
