Descendants of

Frank and Jennie (Queen) Bartel's

Son Benjamin Claude Bartel

Benjamin Claude Bartel8 (Jennie Queen7, Benjamin F. Queen6, Frances “Fanny” Eby5, Benjamin Eby4, Michael Eby3, Christian Eby2, Theodorus Eby1) was born 29 JUN 1897 at Toledo, Ohio. Living at  3418 Summit Ave., Toledo, Ohio, he enlisted in the U.S. Army 3 SEP 1918.  He was discharged 12 DEC 1918.  He had been in 3 Co. 1 Training Battalion, 158 Depot Brigade to discharge.  Honorable discharge as private.

Ben married first Alma Mary O'Harra, daughter of William Henry and Carrie Catherine (Dempsey) O'Harra of Findlay and Toledo, OH. Ben and Alma  resided at 3412 Summit St., Toledo, Ohio in 1920. The couple had one daughter, Ellen Jane Bartelle.

The couple was married by a Justice of the Peace 24 July 1920 in Detroit, Michigan. Ben was 24 and Alma was 18.  Ben spelled his surname "Bartelle" on the marriage license.  Divorce proceedings were started 27 SEP 1928 back in Toledo, Lucas Co., Ohio.  The divorce was final 17 JAN 1929 and custody of daughter Ellen Jane was awarded to her paternal grandmother, Jennie Richmond.  The surname was spelled "Bartel" in the court papers.

Ben married second Mabel Fern Ackley on 23 JAN 1928 (probably 1929), in Angola, IN. Fern was the daughter of Frank and Hattie (Eckel) Ackley, of Freesoil, MI. The couple became the parents of six children.

Ben and Fern should have been listed in the 1930 federal census -- probably living with or near Ben's mother Jennie and her husband Charles Richmond in Sylvania, Ohio.  However, I could not find a listing for the couple.  Ben's daughter Ellen, 8, was living with his mother; his sister Bessie Kronsberger and her husband Ferdinand were living next door.

After many years living in Sylvania, OH, Ben moved his growing family to a small farm outside Ida, MI.  Members of the family continue to reside their today (2003).

Ben was a machine repairman at the Dana Corp, in Toledo, and a member of Local 23, United Auto Workers, when he died of lung cancer 7 MAR 1961.  He was also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Summerfield, MI.

Fern died 8 DEC 1989 at Ida, MI. Ben and Fern are buried at Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania, Ohio.

Ben and Alma were the parents of:

            (1)        Ellen Jane Bartelle, born 5 DEC 1921 at Sylvania, Lucas County, OH (more of whom below).

Ben and Fern were the parents of:

            (1)        Marion Fern, born summer 1929; died 25 OCT 1929.  Marion Fern died at the age of three months.  She is buried at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery but there is no grave marker at this time (2000).  Sister Barbara recalls that her mother Fern had always wished to have the child buried with her, and Barbara may have the remains exhumed and reburied with her parents who are also resting in the same cemetery.

            (2)        Gerald Newton, born 22 MAR 1931 at Sylvania; married first Dorothy Lavoy and second 24 FEB 1967 Ann Louise Frazure, born 9 AUG 1936 at Toledo. Jerry was a retired security officer at the time of his death.  Having no children of his own, he took a special interest in his second wife's daughter and family, as well as in his many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was very active in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church outside Ida, Michigan.  He is buried in the church cemetery.  Sisters Barbara and Rachel (Ricky), as well as Ricky's husband, Earl Weiler, plan to be buried there, as well.

Jerry was instrumental in building a baseball field and recreational buildings behind the church.  There is a large cross behind the field which was also Jerry's idea, according to sister Barbara.  He has left a major legacy for the whole community.
