Benjamin Eby

Benjamin4 (Michael3, Christian2, Theodorus1), was born in 1789 in New Castle Co., DE. We believe his father had been born in Pennsylvania and returned to Pennsylvania after his sojourn in Delaware.

The 1850 census for Hopewell Township, Perry County, Ohio shows our Benjamin Eby born in about 1788 in Pennsylvania. Even though Benjamin lists himself as born in Pennsylvania, I believe these are one in the same persons.  He, no doubt, was raised in Pennsylvania.

In the 1850 census, we find Benjamin Eby, 62, and his wife Elizabeth, 54.  Benjamin, a wheelwright, owns no land at this time but has a large family. Benjamin is listed as born in PA; his wife in VA.  At home are daughter Sarah, 22, born in PA; and four children born in Ohio: Andrew, 19, a carpenter; Abraham, 16, a farmer; John, 13; and Magdalene, 10.

Two other Eby families in the area also have daughters named Magdalene. Uncle Andreas has a daughter Magdalene and Cousin Johannes has a daughter Magdalene.

In the 1860 census for Thorn twp, Perry Co., OH, we find Benjamin, 70, and Elizabeth Eby, 54, with their children:  Sarah, 33; John, 24, listed as a laborer;  and Martha (Magdalene by another name), 21.  Abraham, now 26, is married to another Martha and is a blacksmith.  Benjamin still listed as born in PA, but occupation is carpenter.

By 1870, the elderly Benjamin Eby has died but we follow his family through his daughter Fanny and her household.

Elizabeth Eby, 79, infirm and blind, is listed in the 1870 census as living in the home of her grandson, Benjamin, now married to Rachel Lowry.
