Burton Leroy Shullaw7

Burt7 (James Leroy6, Benjamin Franklin5, Jacob4, Peter3, Christophel2, Frederick1) was born 8 DEC 1920 at Wyoming, Stark county, IL.

Burton Leroy Shullaw, a retired geologist, died Thursday, November 12, 1998, inCovington,LA (a suburb ofNew Orleans).  He was 77.  He had been graduated from Monmouth College (Illinois) and received his master’s degree in geology from theUniversity of Colorado.  He served in the armed forces during World War II and participated in the Normandy Invasion of Europe.  He was employed as a geologist by ChevronUSA from 1947 until his retirement in 1985 as General Manager for Exploration - Eastern Region.  He spent his years after retirement traveling with his wife of fifty years, Mary.  He was an avid golfer and gardener.

Burt's niece, the Rev. Dianne O'Connell ofAnchorage,Alaska, officiated at the memorial service conducted November 15 at the E.J. Fielding Funeral Home in Covington.  Burt’s cremains were taken to a hill top outsideChattanooga,TN.  Wife Mary Faye Raulston was born 17 JUL 1925, inChattanooga.  The couple was married22 NOV 1947.

Burt and Mary Shullaw attended the 50th Anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy in the summer of 1994.  It was an extremely moving experience for both of them, particularly Burt who had participated in the invasion during World War II.

"I landed atUtah Beach.  We touredNormandy, France,Belgium, andGermany, everywhere we fought -- that's what the tour was about," Burt explained. "I never could go back before, but this was really emotional, very meaningful.  We spent three weeks over there.  We stayed in the same place inLondon where I was billeted during the war," he added.

Mary added, "We went to one little town and they invited us to a street party.  When we came around the corner, there were people hanging out the windows, little kindergarten children jumping up and down, flags, bands -- a big celebration just like after the war.  They were so happy to see us.  One old man, and a younger woman, came up and talked and talked to me in French and broken English.  We could make each other understand.  I must have hugged every Frenchman inNormandy.  I cried through the whole procession."

Coincidentally, Burt and Mary also visited second cousin Marly Porter and her husband Carl atCamano Island,WA, later in the summer.  The Porters were very excited about THEIR trip to theNormandy celebration. Both couples had been there at the same time -- but didn't know it.  Neither did the two men know that they had been atNormandy together 50 years before.

"Carl was in the paratroopers landing at St. Mary's Beach," Burt explained.  "They were captured.  Later they were rescued by the Fourth Division.  I was in the Fourth Division and participated in that rescue.

"We also figured out that we stayed in the same hotel inLondon only three days apart.  Both couples were also watching U.S. President Bill Clinton's speech in the same crowd at the same time atNormandy.

"Carl is more emotional about all this than I am," Burt added.  "He could barely talk about it, even after we all got back."

Daughter’s Comments

Wayne Jackson Shullaw, born4 SEP 1918, graduated from Wyoming High School in 1936 andEureka College,Eureka, IL, in 1941.  He married a fellow Coast Guardsperson, Ellen Jane Bartelle ofToledo,OH,18 OCT 1944, at Rutgers Presbyterian Church,New York City.  They had one daughter, this writer.

Wayne soon leftNew York for Ketchikan,Alaska, to finish out his military service prior to being discharged. Upon his return to "the states," the family moved toMantua,OH, where Wayne and Ellen purchased the "Mantua Record" with the help of a G.I. loan.

"I went to work as a printer's devil when I was 12 and I've been in newspaper work ever since,"Wayne said at the time of the purchase.

Father Roy sent helpful typesetting hints and other encouragement.  But the newspaper did not prosper and it was sold a little while later.

Wayne checked out newspaper employment in Pekin,IL, just south ofPeoria.  Ellen and daughter followed.  The family also lived in Hudson,IA, where there was a small community newspaper, before moving toLansing,IL, in 1951, whereWayne was offered a job as editor of the Lansing Journal.  This was the same Journal that daughter Dianne served as women's editor during her senior year of high school some years later.

TheLansing area, thirty miles south of Chicago, but still inCook County, became a permanent home of sorts.

Wayne worked for a number of different printing companies inChicago after leaving the Journal.  He and Ellen were divorced during the summer of 1957 and he moved intoChicago until his retirement in 1980. Ellen remained inLansing and/or neighboringCalumet City.  She lived inLansing until her death in 1999.

Wayne re-married 18 DEC 1965.  He and his wife, the former Lynn Kinnian ofLake Forest,IL, lived inMarina Towers in the Chicago Loop for the first fifteen years of their marriage.  Wayne retired from the Sears Roebuck Company in December of 1980.  He had worked in the production department of the catalog division for more than 15 years.

He and Lynn bought a home in theFlorida Keys (Plantation Key Colony, Tavernier), where he had planned to enjoy his days mostly in the pursuit of the wily cold-blooded, gilled vertebrate (Illusivus Swimmicannus). He learned he had lung cancer in June of 1982.  After two years of chemotherapy, he died31 MAY 1984 at his home.  He was 65 years old. Memorial services were held at the Coral Isles (Disciples of Christ, Congregational) Church on 8 JUN.   His body was cremated and dispersed over the ocean (Gulf of Mexico).
